Springtime doesn’t mean just blossoming flowers and warmer temperatures. It also means breaking out the BBQ, enjoying the great outdoors with a picnic or a game of softball. It’s a time to (hopefully) reconnect with friends and family and celebrate new beginnings with good food and a little something sweet.
And nothing screams Southern sweetness more than a delicious buttermilk pie to round out your meal.
Buttermilk pie may be synonymous with the South, but did you know it was actually believed to originate from England? Southern settlers ended up bringing the recipe to the United States, and it was most frequently made in Texas due to their abundance of buttermilk. Plus it was an easy pie to make when fruit wasn’t in season.
We’ve taken this Southern favorite and given it a fresh Spring makeover and you can too with just a little effort, (and some serious strawberries!)
Here’s what you’ll need:
One whole Cracker Barrel Buttermilk Pie
3 to 4 tablespoons Dickinson’s(R) Strawberry Preserves
1 to 2 pints of fresh strawberries, rinsed and drained
Optional: Fresh Mint and Powdered Sugar
Directions:
1. Spread Dickinson’s ® Strawberry Preserves over the top of the Cracker Barrel Buttermilk Pie.
2. Leave some of the small fresh strawberries whole, with green tops still on. Slice some of the strawberries into circles, cut some into wedges and chop others into squares.
3. Exercise your decorative skills by creating a ring on the outside edge of the buttermilk pie with the cut-up strawberries.
4. As an option, you can also slip a few mint leaves on top of the berries and dust the pie with some powdered sugar.
